Ed Sheeran- Lego House

As we spoke about in class, poets are not people of the past. Poets are found in the present day, often in the form of musicians and singer/songwriters. Ed Sheeran is a very famous British singer who writes many of his own songs. In our class discussion during the introduction to poetry, we recited several pieces of poetry, one of them being Ed's song Thinking Out Loud. In addition to that song being one my favorites by one of my favorite singers, this song titled Lego House is one of Ed's first hits. He uses building a house out of Legos as a metaphor for his romantic relationship. Some lyrics that have always stood out to me are when, in the very beginning, he sings "I'm gonna pick up the pieces/ And build a Lego house/ When things go wrong we can knock it down," and then lateron when he sings "I'm gonna paint you by numbers and color you in/ If things go right we can frame it, and put you on a wall." In both of these parts of the song, he uses objects to describe what they would do if things went right or wrong in their relationship. If things weren't the best, they could "knock it down," meaning either break up or try again from where things went wrong. However, if things were going in the direction they wanted, they could "frame it" to remember the highlighted moments of their relationship.
